That “Wrong Number” Text Is a Billion-Dollar Funnel

“Hi, is this Amanda from the yoga studio? Sorry — wrong number! … You seem friendly though 😊.” If your phone has buzzed with a version of that, you’ve been touched by the highest-volume scam funnel operating today. Here’s the machine behind the friendly typo.

Week 0: the spray

The texts go out by the million from industrial operations — many staffed, grimly, by trafficked workers in compounds overseas. There is no Amanda, no yoga studio; there is a spreadsheet of numbers and a script whose first job is one reply. ANY reply — even “wrong number, good luck” — marks your line as live and moves you to a human operator.

Weeks 1–3: the friendship that asks for nothing

The pivot is soft: apologies become small talk, small talk becomes daily good-mornings, photos arrive (stolen — two minutes exposes them). Crucially, NOTHING is requested. The absence of an ask is the funnel’s genius — it dissolves exactly the suspicion that would save you.

Weeks 3–6: the enviable life

Your new friend trades crypto, casually successful — screenshots of gains, a mentor they credit, no pressure. Eventually YOU ask how it works. The “platform” they share is theirs: your first small deposit shows profits, a withdrawal even succeeds once, and then the balance grows until the “tax” to release it appears. The full mechanism is pig butchering, and the losses are the largest per-victim in all of romance fraud.
