The First 48 Hours After You Realize It’s a Scam

The moment of realization is a cliff — shame, panic, disbelief, sometimes grief for a person who never existed. This post is the rope: what to do, in order, while the window still matters. Print it, follow it, feel later.

Hour 0–2: the money paths, before anything else

Call your bank’s fraud line and say the word “fraud.” Wires can occasionally be recalled in the first hours; card payments can be disputed; payment apps sometimes refund card-funded fraud. Sent gift cards? Report the codes to the issuing company NOW — freezes are rare but real, and speed is everything. Crypto: notify the exchange you used anyway; recovery odds are honest-to-low, but flagging wallets helps the chain of evidence.

Hour 2–6: freeze the future

Change the passwords they could know — email first (it resets everything else). If any ID, SSN, or account numbers were shared, freeze your credit at all three bureaus (free, reversible) and file the plan at IdentityTheft.gov. If intimate images are involved, do NOT pay — read the sextortion response before replying to anything.

Hour 6–24: preserve, then cut

Screenshot everything BEFORE blocking: profiles, chats, payment confirmations, the phone numbers and usernames. Then block on every channel — and expect the follow-up personas (“his lawyer,” “his daughter,” an “investigator”). Silence is the only reply that costs them.

Day 2: the reports that compound

And the second scam, already circling

Post about your loss anywhere public and the “recovery experts” arrive within hours — guaranteed fund retrieval, upfront fee. That is the same industry, second harvest. No legitimate recovery charges before recovering. The 48 hours are brutal; walk them in order, and you exit with your money paths worked, your identity guarded, and your evidence weaponized.
