How to Report a Romance Scammer (In the Order That Matters)
Reporting feels pointless mid-heartbreak — it isn’t. Reports freeze accounts, occasionally recover late transfers, feed federal cases against syndicates, and (here) become searchable armor for the next target. The order below is the order of urgency.
1. Your bank — within hours if money moved
Call the fraud line on your card/statement immediately: wire recalls occasionally succeed early, card payments can be disputed, and pending transfers can sometimes be stopped. Say the words “fraud” and “romance scam” explicitly. If you forwarded money for them, say that too — self-reporting mule activity first matters (see the mule guide).
2. Federal: IC3 and the FTC
ic3.gov (FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center) — the report that feeds actual investigations; include usernames, numbers, wallet addresses, and payment details. reportfraud.ftc.gov — feeds the consumer-protection database and pattern enforcement. File both; fifteen minutes total.
3. The platform where it started (and moved)
Report the profile on the dating app/Facebook/Instagram AND the chat app it migrated to (WhatsApp: open chat → contact name → Report). Platform reports kill the account’s access to its other current victims — often the most immediate harm you can do the operation.
4. The money rails
Gift cards: call the issuer (some freeze unredeemed balances). Crypto: report the wallet address to the exchange you sent from. Wire services (Western Union/MoneyGram) maintain their own fraud lines and occasionally intercept.
5. The public record — this registry
File the report here with the names, numbers, photos, and script details: the next target searching at 2am finds YOUR report where official databases show them nothing. And if anyone DMs offering to “recover” your funds afterward — that’s the second harvest; report them too.
Check before you trust
