The Sextortion Playbook — and the One Rule That Beats It
It moves faster than any other romance-adjacent crime: matched Monday, flirting Tuesday, intimate exchange Wednesday, and Thursday the account flips — pay or every follower, coworker, and family member gets the images. Here’s the playbook from the other side, and the counter that works.
The manufactured urgency
The countdown — “you have one hour” — is the weapon. Panic breaks judgment; every demand is engineered to prevent the one thing that defeats the scheme: pausing. The threat is real enough to fear and far less certain than they claim — mass exposure is work, and their business is volume, not vendettas.
Why paying is gasoline
Payment proves you’ll pay. Reports show demands continuing and escalating after payment — you’ve marked yourself as a yielding target, and the “deletion” you bought is unverifiable. The one rule holds absolutely: never pay, never negotiate.
The response that ends it
Stop replying entirely. Screenshot everything — profile, threats, payment demands. Block, but report FIRST: the platform, IC3, and for the fastest takedown of intimate images, tools like NCMEC’s Take It Down (for minors) and StopNCII (adults) hash your images so platforms block them proactively. Then file the artifacts in the registry — sextortion accounts recycle handles and payment addresses, and your report intercepts the next target mid-countdown.
The registry only works if people report
Every phone number, username, and script submitted becomes searchable armor for the next person. Anonymous, human-moderated, three minutes.
